Driverless taxis to begin full-scale operation in Dubai by March

On February 5th, Dubai's Crown Prince Hamdan announced the launch of the fully autonomous taxi "RT6," developed by Apollo Go, a subsidiary of Chinese search giant Baidu. As part of Dubai's smart mobility strategy, the taxi is scheduled to begin service to the public in the first quarter of 2026 (January to March).
This initiative is a collaboration between Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Baidu, and was launched approximately 10 months after discussions at the World Government Summit in 2025. RT6 is equipped with over 40 sensors, including artificial intelligence (AI), high-precision LiDAR, radar, and cameras, to operate safely and autonomously in real traffic environments. Software that integrates high-definition maps and deep learning allows the vehicle to smoothly interact with intersections, pedestrians, and other vehicles, while complying with traffic laws.
The company has opened its first operation and control center outside China (approximately 2,000 square meters) in Dubai Science Park, which will handle daily operation monitoring, software updates, maintenance, training, and simulations, with plans to expand to accommodate more than 1,000 vehicles in the future.
